Beijing is moving fast to stifle Hong Kong’s democracy movement. It seeks to lock up media tycoon Jimmy Lai and bankrupt his newspaper.

If Mr. Lai, 72, spends years in prison, at least he’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that China’s leaders consider him a dangerous adversary. Mr. Lai is “pretty bold and bad-ass in the way he expresses his disdain for Beijing,” says Tom Grundy, editor-in-chief of the Hong Kong Free Press, another independent publication.
