When an antidote to reality is needed, few books commit to over-the-top escapism like Jacqueline Susann’s 1966 “Valley of the Dolls.” With all the Dom Pérignon quaffed and caviar consumed, the book is a guilty pleasure, minus the hangover. For those not tempted just now by “Finnegans Wake,” that’s a plus.
